General Information

Welcome to all new students in Amsterdam, a lovely city with a rich history, culture, and traditions! Studying in Amsterdam will not only enrich your knowledge by broadening your horizons but it also enables you to build lifelong friendships with students from all around the world. We will help you with this by bringing you together with our unforgettable activities, events and trips. We hope that this way you can get the most out of your stay!

A great way to start your exchange is by joining the Summer Introduction which will take place from Tuesday 24th to Thursday 26th of August 2021. This summer introduction is tailored just for you to be prepared for your first days in Amsterdam. During this introduction week, ESN Amsterdam will introduce you to the city, the universities, the Dutch culture and language, and give you an opportunity to meet your fellow international students, with fun activities. We will make sure to give you an exciting start of your journey in Amsterdam!

Note that the physical events will still follow Covid-19 measures including the 1.5m distance rule. 

Currently there’s two options to join the introduction week:

-Digital Only

Become a coach

Hello everyone!

ESN Amsterdam is currently organizing the summer introduction week of 2021 and we need your help! ESN Amsterdam highly depends on local students to show the incoming exchange students what Amsterdam and the universities have to offer by being a coach for our introduction week! 

The ESN Introduction Week is for incoming exchange students at the University of Amsterdam and Amsterdam University of Applied Sciences and will take place between Tuesday, August 24th and Thursday, August 26th. This introduction week will be full of cultural activities, fun workshops, and more ways to get to know international students! (Be aware that if you apply, you have to be available during these days.)

Program

Regardless if you’re joining just online or also physical. Both programs have all the information you need to ensure you will have a great few days in Amsterdam. 

 

For the physical program on the 24th of August, there will be a moment in the program where you will receive wristbands from your coaches, to participate in the physical events.

 

Note: Due to the corona virus measures there might be some slight changes to the events and times, you will be informed accordingly on this website or via e-mail communication if you have already signed up.

Tuesday, August 24th

This day is online with a moment to pick up your wristband, which will be in-person.

10:30-11:30 Official Welcome + Survival Guide (ONLINE)

During this video we will welcome you to the new city you will be studying in! Get ready for lots of tips and tricks, hotspots, how to deal with the Dutch people, but also useful suggestions that will make your student life much easier and more enjoyable. This part of the introduction week will premiere on the app and will later be on youtube channel so you can always go back and rewatch something at your own leisure after the introduction week! There is also a chance to win a prize by watching the video so make sure you’ll pay close attention!

 

12:00-13:00 Q&A and Connect (ONLINE)

Now that you’ve watched the video, it’s a great opportunity to meet your fellow group members, and also ask some questions you may already have! In this live Q&A session it’s time to throw out all the questions you have about being a student and Amsterdam or maybe something completely else you also had in mind!

In the meantime meet your group members through Zoom or another platform while joining the Q&A together!

 

14:00-15:00 Culture Workshop (ONLINE)

If you just arrived here in the Netherlands, you want to be ready to understand the important traditions that the country has, but also get to know the Dutch values a bit to prevent having a culture-shock. And Amsterdam is more than just the Dutch culture as we have everyone from around the world! So how do we work together with so many different cultures? 

Then join the workshop, led by an experienced trainer,  to understand the Amsterdam culture better during your stay in here! This is the best moment to learn the essential things about how to understand a different culture  and great ideas to work in a multicultural team  to kick-start your academic year in the Netherlands!

 

16:00-17:00 Crash Course Dutch (ONLINE)

If you just arrived in The Netherlands, learning Dutch can help you along the way during your stay. The most important phrases and words that are essential to know during your time in Amsterdam will be covered during the Crash Course Dutch. 

For example: “Hoe gaat het?”  (how are you?), or “mag ik een koffie? (can I get a coffee?) and many other things! 

 

17:00-19:30 Registration (PHYSICAL)

Meet your group! In preparation for the next days full of physical events it’s important to get to know your coach and group in person already. Discuss what you’re doing the next day full of cultural activities and fun things around the city! (If you’ve missed the wristband pickup registration days your coach can still provide a wristband but don’t miss the registration on Sunday and Monday 10:00-17:00)

20:30-22:00 The Amsterdam Pubquiz (ONLINE)

Get to know the city better and test your knowledge by joining the Amsterdam Pub Quiz. Participate and meet beat other  international students that are curious about finding out more about the city and learn some nice fun facts that you will never would have guessed that they were true. 

The best group of the evening will also get a prize.

Wednesday, August 25th

This day will be completely physically besides the music bingo. 

10:00-12:45 Museum tour 

With this event you will be able to go visit one of our partner museums in Amsterdam, to enjoy a bit of the dutch culture!

or Artis zoo (9:15-12:45)

In this activity, you will be visiting the oldest zoo in the Netherlands and one of the oldest in Europe! Here where you will have the chance to see different kinds of animals together and learn more about them in this educational Zoo park with other international students. 

13:00-14:00 Boat Tour of Amsterdam 

A trip to Amsterdam wouldn’t be the same without a boat tour through the canals. Take a seat in a  boat and enjoy the beautiful atmosphere that the city has to offer. See every part of the city center and enjoy the view from the waters. During the trip, you will be able to see the city center from a different angle, which you would normally not be able to see from the streets. 

 

14:30-17:00 CREA Workshops 

CREA offers a wide range of workshops to boost your knowledge about different subjects from photography, writing, film, media, and other forms of art. During this activity, you will be able to learn from an experienced instructor that can help you boost your skill of choice that you want to further develop in the form of a workshop.

Park Hangout and Scavenger Hunt (14:30-19:30) 

Meet other international students and make new friends at the park. During this activity, there will be a variety of fun games and a scavenger hunt that will be played during the day and longer throughout the rest of the month! There will be lots of interactive moments where you will have the opportunity to not only connect with other international students, but also a moment to enjoy the atmosphere of the park. Next to games, you will be enjoying the day with a picnic while also having a chat with fellow international students!

 

20:30-22:00 Music Bingo (ONLINE)

During the Music Bingo you will be given a bingo card where traditional bingo numbers have been replaced with song names, music titles or both! You will hear a song that plays 30-second clips of music. When the song ends, you will need to mark off spots on your bingo card. The person who gets all covered squares on their scorecard wins the music bingo. Good luck!

 

11:00-12:00 Dutch Breakfast Workshop

Start your day fresh by learning the Dutch way of making breakfast. Get to know how Dutchies like to prepare their breakfast and learn what the typical Dutch style of breakfast contains. During the activity,  you will learn how a breakfast is being made step-by-step from a Dutch perspective. Learn how to make a typical Dutch breakfast from your own seat and be ready for some healthy meals!

12:30-13:30 Museum Tour 

Here you will gain access to the online museum tour at one of our partner museums.

 

15:00-16:00 CREA Workshops

CREA offers a wide range of workshops to boost your knowledge about different subjects from photography, writing, film, media and other forms of art. Thursday, August 26th

 

This day will be completely physically. 

12:00-16:00 Sports

Exercise with other international students at the University Sports Centre and play your favorite sports in an outdoor setting to meet other students who share similar interests. During this activity, you will be able to join other students in playing a range of different sports that you would like while also enjoy the beautiful view around the Science Park campus

20:00-23:59 Bar Evening

It’s already the end of the introduction week, so it’s time to have a nice final get together at one of our partner venues, and close off the week with some new friends! And remember ESN is here for you for the whole semester to make more unforgettable moments together!

NOTE: this is not is not a clubbing event, but a bar evening following corona measurers.

 

13:00-14:00 Sports 

Join the online sport workshop! In this workshop you can exercise together with other international students by following this nice workout!

Are you an Exchange student from UvA or AUAS?

Then you should be joining ISN’s Introduction Day! ISN’s Introduction day is for exchange students and international students that will be studying at either the University of Applied Sciences (AUAS/HvA) or the University of Amsterdam (UvA).
